The medieval Croatian city of Split overlooks the 150-island Kornati archipelago that lines the gleaming Dalmatian coast. As you look out into the Adriatic from here you can see such islands as Brac, Vis and Hvar.

Turn around to Split itself and gaze upon the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, one of the best-preserved such buildings in all of Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Split’s narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets open onto welcoming piazzas. The high point here, literally speaking, is the top of the cathedral’s bell tower, well worth the 200-foot ascent if you don’t mind all the stairs.

If you’d like to sample some fine local wines, red and white, try one of the many konobas, or wine cellars. If it’s caffeine you crave, sip a cup of coffee at a cafe along the seafront promenade known as the Riva. Stewed beef with noodles, lamb dishes and smoky, wind-dried ham are among the local delicacies.

The ruins of Salona, the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, are only three miles away.
