Lush rainforest and golden beaches wrap this island, a surprisingly uncrowded spot in the eastern Caribbean. Though St. Kitts offers the same gentle climate, awe-inspiring scenery and welcoming surf as its Leeward Island neighbors, it’s a largely undeveloped place -- one where the carefree spirit of the Caribbean has not given way to unrelenting droves of tourists. Snorkeling forms the basis of most excursions to St. Kitts, with the hidden coves of the island’s southeast end offering the most colorful diving spots. Plantation homes, another favorite attraction, trace the growth of the country through its former sugar mills and other colonial landmarks. Also available for tours is Brimstone Hill, a 17th-century fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site that once sheltered the Caribbean from invading armies, and St. Kitts’ sister isle, the equally scenic Nevis.
