The largest of the British Virgin Islands, Tortola offers 20 square miles of white-sand beaches, tangled jungle and jagged volcanic peaks. This unspoiled spot also is know for its small, sheltered harbors, where visits by luxury ocean liners and private yachts alike have earned Tortola’s reputation as a boater’s paradise. First-time visitors are ferried through Road Town, Tortola’s hillside capital. Artisans’ shops, spicy Caribbean restaurants and boutique hotels ring a stunning turquoise bay; fishing charters and guided tours of the island interior also can be found here. Outside town, some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean -- including Lower Belmont Bay, a snorkeling retreat, and Cane Garden Bay, a popular fishing spot -- sit along the sea. Another attraction, Mount Sage National Park, protects pristine rainforest and the hiking trails used to explore their darkened depths.
