Toulon is France’s primary naval base, yet it retains an unexpected charm. Because it’s not a major tourist destination, there are few crowds, so you can roam the cobblestone streets of the old town without distractions. Visit the excellent maritime and art museums, the spectacular Romanesque cathedral and the market, where fresh flowers, fruit and vegetables are displayed each day. You can also spot French warships maneuvering in and out of the harbor. Mont Faron offers unspoiled views of the town and the harbor and is accessible via a cable car. Top-notch beaches are within a short drive along the coast; you can also explore the countryside of Provence from here.
