What more can one say about this world capital of culture? Emerging from the slew of Italian city-states to become one of the world’s dominant seafaring mercantile powers, Venice experienced a golden age that left behind architectural monuments and masterpieces of art that are still cherished today.

Cruise ships dock either near St. Mark’s Square or farther up the Grand Canal. Cars are prohibited inside the city center, with its maze of cobblestone streets and 500 historic bridges. So walking is the way to go, unless you’d rather hop a vaporetto (water bus) to navigate the network of canals that define the city. The famous gondola rides are worth doing for the unique experience, but they are not the most practical means of transportation.

Begin in St. Mark’s Square, around which can be found the venerable Basilica, sumptuous Doge’s Palace and signature bell tower. From here you can follow signs to the shop-lined Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs. Or just get pleasantly lost: Anywhere you go here, you’re bound to discover intriguing storefronts, art galleries and historical sites, not to mention delicious cuisine and charming cafes.
