Set along the “Seafood Coast” of Spain, little Vigo is known as the country’s busiest fishing port. Restaurants are a priority here, of course, and favorite dishes overflow with fresh oysters, octopus and centolla, a type of King Crab. Galicia, the region surrounding Vigo, also is know for its bold red wines – visitors can’t help but sample the local varietals during a visit to the city. History is another draw here. The earliest records date Vigo to the 15th century; the city has survived several attacks from the sea over the years, including assaults from Sir Francis Drake and the infamous German U-Boat fleets common during World War II. A historic fort, Castillo del Castro, still stand on a hill overlooking the city, and a charming old quarter, Barrio del Berbes, still lures those looking for awe-inspiring architecture.
